RESEARCH INTERESTS: Adopting a developmental psychopathology perspective, my research examines the development of substance use behaviors, particularly in high-risk youth. Emphases include the role of emotions and internalizing symptoms in the development and escalation of substance use; developmental pathways leading to substance involvement and disorder; and processes underlying risk and resilience in children of alcoholic parents. This work incorporates the use of advanced statistical analyses and multi-method approaches, including experience sampling methods. I am also beginning work on a preventive intervention program for young children living with an alcoholic parent and their families. For more details of ongoing studies, see links below to Cross Study, the High School Transition Study, and the Prevention Project.
