Suzie and her kitten.

Suzie began work as Club Nova's "Rehabilitation Therapy Specialist" in May of 2002. A graduate of North Carolina at Chapel Hill who majored in psychology, Suzie saw Club Nova as a way to use what she had learned in college and a means to stay in the Chapel Hill community she adores. In her months at Club Nova she has spent her time advising her Club House Member friends and keeping the Thrift Shop running. Like a pair of kinder, gentler tag team wrestlers, Suzie works with Camellia in the Thrift Shop to ensure the welfare of the store and Club House Members. A staff member must be in the store at all times, so Camellia and Suzie coordinate their hours. If the one is out doing errands, the other is sure to be present in the shop.

Members look to Suzie as a confidant, someone who will sit down and listen to their problems and genuinely care. Suzie enjoys these friendships saying "being friends with all the members…adds a lot to my life." Suzie's gift lies in being able to relate to all Members. The impairment of Members ranges from slight to severe. Suzie is deft at traversing the wide range of disabilities. [Hear Suzy discuss work for Club House Members.]

Like the abandoned kittens she raises and brings to the Shop, Suzie is warm and sweet. Yet, her success is not due to her sweetness alone. Her excellent people skills have allowed her to make valuable friendships with Club House Members. Her business acumen has helped get the store on the ground. In less than a year, Suzie has established herself as a strong force within the Club Nova community, a respected friend and colleague.
