Order of Readings:
Note that all readings are recorded and available on the course Blackboard site along with the readings and vocabulary notes.
  1. Occupation-era fashion history text
  2. Style magazine reading (1946) on women's fashion
  3. Style magazine reading (1946) on men's fashion
  4. Occupation-era etiquette book for diplomat, Etiquette and Society (1948)
  5. Essays on Japanese women and brands (2002)
  6. Other articles related to contemporary fashion--it depends how much time we have left in the semester when we get to this point, if there's time for more readings, we will work on beauty issues: women's beauty contest, men's esute, teen beauty guides.
  7. We will also view and discuss selections from the film Tony Takitani
Class meets every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon; we'll try to get through all the occupation-era readings by the end of September, and work on contemporary fashion in October.  Expect a kanji quiz every Thursday.  Please note important due dates below:

  • First Midterm: Scheduled for  Tuesday, October 3
  • Second Midterm:  Scheduled for Thursday, November 16
  • Tutorials: Week of September 11-15 and Week of October 16-20.
  • Translation Project: Draft due November 2; Final draft due November 21
  • Presentations will take place in the last four class periods:
  • Nov. 21: Adamson, Battle,  Moore & Smith, Taylor
  • Nov. 28: Closner, Northup, Foote-hudson, Good
  • Nov. 30: Beaman, Fu, Mayer, Nunnelley
