Max

Max is a technically skilled player, very consistent... He doesn't have too many bad games, doesn't make too many major mistakes... but he is somewhat predictable as a result. He's pretty conservative strategically. Tempest, in his old profile of Max, suggested that Max tends to set up a defensive setup on one front, then advance a loose line of pills on his attacking front. I can't say I've ever paid enough attention to determine whether Max still does this or not, but I think it is safe to say that Max is still a pretty pillfront-oriented player. One weakness Max has is a tendency to make long plants and/or rebuilds. He also tends to use fairly basic takes a lot.. The upshot of this is that he often sends his man on long trips whose destination you can predict fairly accurately. You can often get a few free pills this way. I have had some success by finding holes in Max's fronts or by flanking: he sometimes seems to expect you to attack his pills, so you can surprise him by attacking behind the lines. One interesting note is that Max has never lost a 2x2--his ally always blows it for him. He is also the holder of a Diamond Award for Lifetime Achievement in Positive Bolo Attitude. Hah.

Max is a consistently good player who often raises his game against better players. He has played the game a long time, so he has excellent bolo strategy. His experience also helps him to see opportunities that others may miss. Max has a tendency to lose his builder a lot. He would much rather lose his man than lose a pill, and at times that can get him into trouble. By playing with him, I have noticed that at times Max loses touch with his partner (s) in games. For example, he will risk losing his man on a take when his partner doesnt have a man. With that in mind, I believe Max is a much better 1x1 player. However, Max is a formidable opponent and i would choose him as a partner any day.
