Red Tide

by Black Flag

Red Tide was my roommate at Wooster, so a) I know his game from day one and b) you could take my appraisal with a grain of salt.

Red is oldschool--he started playing Appletalk on version .95 back in 1992. After a net-connection-less hiatus of about half a decade, he got an iMac last year and came out of retirement. Now that he's upgraded to cable, he's been playing a lot. The 5 year interlude in his career means that he has had to relearn most everything, particularly given that he & I both pretty much sucked 5 years ago.

RT is a bit of an unusual player, in that he has very developed tactical skills compared to his strategic conceptualization--while that's a common problem for relatively inexperienced players, Red's tactical abilities are really out-of-whack with his W/L record. He is prone to overextend in 1x1, and can be drawn out of position by a feint on one front/attack opposite front move. On the other hand, he is quite fast and adept with pilltakes when taking neutrals, or when the opposition is out of the picture. When facing a capable opponent, Red is prone to get over-enthusiastic or hurried and gets his LGM killed. In a 3x3, RT can be quite dangerous if he winds up getting ignored for a bit--he can rack up several pills in a hurry.

He can shoot LGM's in a set-piece take, but he's not very dangerous trying to range "on the fly": if you run in to spike him, a swerve-and-spike will usually fake him out. He can be disrupted with a forceful spike & rape attack--even if you lose your man in the process, it takes him a little while to recover.

Red is vulnerable to vulturing, as he's not always thinking of where the opposition might be coming from when he's pulling his takes.

Overall, Red is a mid-level player. He can be handled, but you should not underestimate him.
