• Free Win versions:
  • MiKTeX: the current choice. Works well with the WinEdt editor. 4Spell is a nice spell checker.
  • Emtex: Allin Cottrell's version is a bit dated but works quite well. Use with the PFE editor.

• 1988 and 1994 County and City Data Books (CCDB). You can make custom extracts of variables for all states, counties, cities or places.
• 1998 USA Counties. Cannot make extracts for all counties :(.
• 1990 Census Lookup. Place, tract, etc. data from 1990 Census Summary Tape File 3 (STF3). Again. hard to make big extracts.

• U.S. Census Bureau Data Extraction System gives on-line extrations and data maps of county-level, 1790-1970 censuses (basically ICPSR study 0003).
• 1% Intergrated Public Use Microdata (IPUMS). Micro data covering many census variables for 1850-1990. You can generate extracts on the fly and even pinpoint individual addresses for censuses prior to 1930.
• animated GIF of U.S. counties from 1600s to present (a local copy if the link breaks)

• General Social Survey (GSS): A micro data set started in 1972 with lots of info on individual characteristics and attitudes on policies, ideology, religion, etc. Use the GSS Codebook and then enter the variables of interest into the web-based GSS data extractor (the latter also contains data for the American National Election Study). You can get cross-tabs and various stats on the fly.
• Religion data: American Religion Data Archive has a lot of what is out there on-line. I have used the 1952-1990 county-level data most extensively.
