This book gives a good detailed account of the “life” of Sherlock Holmes, and provides a timeline in which the cases occurred.  It also links the “life” of Holmes to events of the era.  Davis: PR4624.B33

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Hardwick, Michael and Mollie Hardwick.  The Man who was Sherlock Holmes.  Garden City: Doubleday and Company, Inc, 1964.

  This is a short biography of Doyle that tells of his early education, medical practice, and writings.  This work also shows the real life crimes that Doyle investigated.  Easy and quick to read, this book is a good start so that you are familiar with Doyle’s life before starting other more detailed biographies.  Davis: PR4623.H3 1964a

Nordon, Pierre.  Conan Doyle A Biography.  New York: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1967.

     This biography treats Doyle’s life as a series of events, subdividing it into his greatest trends.  The first half deals with his early life, military service, intercession in legal issues, and an interest in spiritualism.  The second half deals with his life as a writer, and how his personality can be found in his stories.  This is a more detailed biography, and includes an index.  Davis: PR4623.N613 1967
