Dr. Seuss: A Pathfinder

"I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells.  Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, it's a way of looking at life through the wrong end of the telescope.  Which is what I do, and that enables you to laugh at life's realities." -Dr. Seuss

Introduction

As Victor H. Krulak writes: "In every era, it seems, there emerge a tiny few who march to a different drummer than the rest of us--a drummer whose beat is barely audible to the day-to-day world.  Ted Geisel was one of those mystical people.  His extraordinary lenses showed him a world where elves, leprechauns, and the little people are very real.  His was a world where there is good everywhere, if only we take the time to see it.  And he did his best to show us how."  Dr. Seuss's books, among the best-loved by children and adults alike, not only delight the reader/listener with their whimsical and evocative text and illustrations, but offer a world of teaching possibilities.  Whether it be helping a young student to learn his/her alphabet, to master beginning reading, to delight in being read to, or to examine important individual and societal concerns, Dr. Seuss's books offer limitless opportunities to broach these tasks.  Truly, Dr. Seuss's life and work help us to see "there is good everywhere."

Scope

This pathfinder is intended to introduce elementary school teachers and children's librarians, as well as interested adults, to Dr. Seuss (A.K.A. Theodor Seuss Geisel, A.K.A. Theo. LeSieg, A.K.A. Rosetta Stone), his background, and his work (including evaluation and reviews).  It is also designed to be a resource, highlighting current teaching methods and lesson plans based on and derived from his books that would be helpful in today's classroom and media center (for example, using Dr. Seuss's books to teach reading, or to promote certain concepts, such as peace, conflict resolution, and environmental awareness).
