Juan Ariel Bogliaccini

Graduate Student

I’m a PhD student in Political Science with a strong interest in Comparative Latin American politics and policies, and in Methods. My main focus is on the weakness of democratic institutions and the pressures that processes of regionalization are having on domestic polities, especially on social policies. These topics represent a major challenge for Latin America.

Soon after obtaining my degree in Sociology at the Universidad Católica del Uruguay I decided to pursue a Master’s Degree in Education Policy at the Universidad Alberto Hurtado in Chile. My Master’s thesis is a qualitative appraisal of full-time schools in Uruguay. I claim in the thesis that the positive impact of these schools on student learning and grade repetition, in disadvantaged environments, depends less on the added time on task with children than on the extra time available for team effort and planning on the part of teachers and directors. Thus, creating a learning community is a challenging yet worthwhile endeavor.

After I returned to Uruguay I worked with Ruben Kaztman and Fernando Filgueira at IPES, a small research center at the U. Católica del Uruguay, and with Luis E. González in his own Consultant Firm; CIFRA.
