MY
COLLEGIATE
HISTORY
I
am a Tar Heel and a sports nut, and those two things go together quite
well. I have been in Chapel Hill since my sophomore year, and I love
it. I am not an irritable person, but I should warn you against saying
anything bad about Carolina to my face. Why would you anyway? It would
not be true.
I was
originally denied admission to Carolina, so I attended Miami of Ohio as
a freshman. My heart has always been with Chapel Hill, so I came here
as soon as I was admitted.
I am
a journalism/mathematics double major. I have always wanted to teach high
school math, but I am also trying to get exposure in the communications
industry. As an intern at the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center,
I had the opportunity to speak with cancer survivors about their stories
and promote the center's activities and accomplishments. I also give weekly
campus tours where I spread that Carolina feeling.
In February
2005, I was accepted into Order
of the Bell Tower, an honorary organization dedicated to assisting
the University and the General Alumni Association through student-alumni
interaction. OBT became the official student ambassador organization for
the University in 1982. In March 2005, I was elected to the Executive
Committee as the Member At Large.
In the
summer of 2005, I took a couple mathematics courses and worked for UNC
Health Care in Public Affairs and Marketing. I wrote feature stories for
the employee newsletter and the School of Medicine's alumni bulletin.
I plan to continue this work through my senior year.
I mentioned
that I am a sports nut, so I might as well tell you about my favorite
Tar Heel sports moments. In two years at the University, I have witnessed
some incredible things.
In the
2003-2004 season, Carolina men's basketball upset No. 1 Connecticut in
a thriller while I sat in the top row. Head coach Roy Williams said it
was one of the best games he had ever coached.
On Oct.
30, 2004, Carolina football pulled off the greatest upset in its 118-year
history. The Heels defeated the No. 4 Miami Hurricanes on a game-ending
42-yard field goal. In many years of watching sports, I have never seen
anything so breathtaking.
Last,
but clearly not least, Carolina men's basketball recently became the 2005
NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Champions. The Heels defeated the Illini
in what was one of the most anticipated championship games in NCAA history.
Being from Illinois, I had a lot on the line and was happy that Carolina
pulled it out. To read more about this experience, click

MY
HIGH SCHOOL
HISTORY
I attended Libertyville
High School in Libertyville, Ill. While I attend college in a true college
town, I also attended high school in a true high school town. My friends
and I still follow LHS Wildcat sports and cheer them on if we are in town.
These hometown friends are among my best.
Wildcat basketball
is what
began my fascination with the sports world. While my peers grew up idolizing
professional sports figures, I was transfixed with Libertyville's hometown
hoops heroes. In fact, I
never got over
my fanaticism and played varsity ball as a junior and senior. I still
consider playing Libertyville basketball to be my greatest accomplishment
along with being admitted to Carolina. I also played varsity baseball
when Libertyville won the North Suburban Conference championship.
Being active in student
government, I coordinated and hosted school-wide assemblies, homecoming
parades, record-setting canned food drives and a blood drive. To read
an article written about me before my graduation, click

MY FAMILY
My parents are great.
I have a tradition of calling my folks after a Carolina victory. We did
not talk much last football season. I missed them.
My dad is an awesome
guy. Everyone tells me I act like him. This scares me because he is a
knee-slapping laugher and a close talker.
Mom is the greatest.
She claims to enjoy talking with me on the phone when I am away at college.
Of course, my mom is my biggest fan. She went to all my games and is always
bugging me about my classes.
My sister,
Jaylyn, is four years older than myself. She is very cool and gives me
great advice. I should hang out with her more. She is an extremely talented
high school math teacher.
