Text: Varberg and Purcell; Calculus with Analytic Geometry, 8th edition, 1997
Prerequisites: A grade of C- or better in Math 31 or placement in this class by the mathematics department. You must submit a placement verification form.
Calculators: Use of a graphing calculator is encouraged. The following are recommended: TI-82, TI-83, TI-85, sharp EL 9300, Casio fx77000. All HP’s, the TI-92, and any other calculators which do symbolic calculus are NOT ALLOWED. Students are expected to learn how to use their own calculator, so keep the manual handy.
Honor Code: It is expected that each student in this class will conduct him/herself within the guidelines of the honor code. All academic work should be done with the high level of honesty and integrity this university demands.
Coursework: In addition to reading the exposition, definitions, theorems, and proofs in the book, you will be expected to work through the examples and do plenty of exercises. Mathematics is best learnt by self-discovery; I recommend daily practice outside of class. A homework list will be provided. Homework will not be collected. You should consider the assigned homework as a minimum workload. There will be in-class quizzes (approx. 2-3 per week) and a few take-home assignments. There will be three in-class tests during the session. A cumulative final examination will be given in our classroom.
Important Dates:
Test 1:- Monday, July 8
Test 2:- Wednesday, July 17
Test 3:- Wednesday July 24 (or Thursday July 25)
Final Exam: - Thursday, August 1, 11:30-2:30
Grading:
Quizzes: 10 %
Tests: 54%
Exam: 36 %
I use the standard 10-point grading scale: A- 90-100, B-80-89, etc.
Make-up Policy: In general no make-ups will be given.
Exceptional circumstances will be judged on a case-by-case basis.
Note that written permission from the dean is required in-order to make-up
the final exam.
Math Help Center:
The Math Department sponsors a Math Help Center, located in Phillips 224. The Center is staffed by graduate students and undergraduate students.
The Center serves all Math courses
numbered below 33. The help center will be open Monday-Thursday from 3:30-5:30 p.m. You are strongly encouraged to take advantage of this resource.
