Disability Access at UNC
September 19, 2003, by Rebecca Williford

Universities in America are unique in that any institution receiving federal financial assistance was subject to the accessibility standards of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, long before the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 applies to almost every college and university in America, and it states that "no qualified individual with a disability in the United States shall be excluded from, denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity that... receives federal financial assistance." This field lab explored how disability legislation impacts programs, facilities, and the lives of Tar Heels at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
