Pressing the University: The Media and UNC
October 10, 2003 by Brook Corwin

Across the UNC campus, the state and even the nation, thousands of eyes are turned on the actions of a public University such as UNC. For this lab session, the class got a behind-the-scenes look at three publications where eyes look for such information. The University Gazette, The Chapel Hill News, and The Daily Tar Heel all opened the doors of their newsrooms for tours led by editors and staff of the publications themselves.

Along the way, the class learned of the diverse readerships of each publication, and how their demands for UNC news varied accordingly. The lab's three speakers illuminated just how closely the University's actions are watched and scrutinized by the general public. Speakers also illustrated the inner workings of their production schedule, guiding the class through the process of covering the University and putting out a publication.

The class got an in-depth look at the prodution of three publications that devote an extensive portion of their coverage to UNC news, taking time out to read the finished product.
