University Day
October 12, 2003, by Rachel Willis

On a beautiful Sunday afternoon in the fall, the University celebrated its founding 210 years earlier with a faculty, staff, and student procession into Hill Hall, the delivery of a special address, and the conferral of honorary degrees for distinguished alumni of the University. October 12, 1793 commemorates the laying of the foundation of Old East and the day has been celebrated since 1877. New Chancellors are usually installed on University Day and Presidents Kennedy and Clinton have delivered the address in 1961 and 1993, respectively.

In 2003, October 12 was also the date for the dedication and re-naming of the School of Government's Knapp-Sanders Hall so many government officials participated in the events.

The University Day Procession begins at the Old Well near the Davie Poplar. With Memorial Hall under renovation in recent years, the event was moved to Hill Hall at the School of Music on McCorkle Place.
