Tyler Curtain was born at Kirtland AFB, just outside Albuquerque, New Mexico, on the 13 July 1966. He is a descendent of nineteenth century atheist, Robert Ingersoll. It is said that Ingersoll was lynched by an angry mob for his opinions about Jesus of Nazareth. This is not true, though it makes for a good family story. Curtain holds the B.Sc. in Computer Science and Computer Engineering from the College of Engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder, and the Ph.D. in English and American Literature from The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland. In Colorado, he worked at the National Center for Atmospheric Research with several flavors of CRAY computers, and with NCAR's first Connection Machine. He was also director of Bionformatics at Rankin Clinical Research Unit at Duke University Medical Center, and Visiting Scholar in the Department of English at Duke University. Curtain specializes in queer theory, cultural studies of computer science, and critical theories of philosophy. He has published many essays. He is currently assembling a special issue of American Literature with Jane Gaines, Professor of Literature and Film at Duke University. Curtain recently finished a manuscript entitled Mistaken evolution: queer sexualities, death, and the anxieties of biological and cultural reproduction (Duke UP, forthcoming). Tyler Curtain is Assistant Professor of English and Cultural Studies in the Department of English, Adunct Assistant Professor of Cultural Studies, and Affiliated Assistant Professor of American Studies at the University of Carolina at Chapel Hill. He holds a 2002-2003 Spray-Randleigh Fellowship at the Institute for the Arts and Humanities. He also sits on the advisory board of the Program in Cultural Studies at UNC Chapel Hill.
