AIDS quilt on display at Union

Carolina student Elizabeth Trefney and her family organized the effort to bring the panel, which features her uncle, Jeremy Trefney, who died of AIDS in 1988, to campus.

A panel of the AIDS Memorial Quilt is on display at the Carolina Union until Jan. 31, thanks to the work of first-year student Elizabeth Trefney.

Trefney worked to bring the panel of the quilt that honors her uncle, Jeremy, who died of AIDS in 1998.

On Wednesday evening, people gathered in front of the panel as Evelyn Foust, head of the N.C. Communicable Disease Branch, talked about the fight against HIV and AIDS.

Chancellor Carol L. Folt also attended the event and spoke about how Carolina is at the forefront of HIV/AIDS research. In 2015, Carolina announced a partnership with GlaxoSmithKline to launch the HIV Cure center.
