North Carolina Campus Compact

What is AmeriCorps*VISTA?

VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) was founded in 1964 as part of President Lynden Johnson's War on Poverty and became part of the AmeriCorps program in 1993. AmeriCorps*VISTA is a national service program upon which volunteers work for non-profit and government organizations that strive to bring people out of poverty. AmeriCorps*VISTA gives citizens the opportunity to make a full-time commitment to lessen poverty through the development of sustainable programs in local non-profit organizations. AmeriCorps*VISTA members commit to one year of service to promote positive growth in communities and are rewarded with a living allowance, health insurance and an education award or small cash stipend upon completion of their term.
