NC Campus Compact AmeriCorps* VISTA at UNC The NC Campus Compact AmeriCorps*VISTA at UNC works in the APPLES Service-Learning Office. She/he assists in coordinating and advising student committees for the Service-Learning Internships, Service and Leadership Living-Learning Community, Service-Learning Initiative, and Alternative Fall and Spring Breaks committees. The VISTA also works in conjunction with other APPLES staff to support Service-Learning Courses, APPLES Executive Cabinet and Student Organizers, Faculty Development Institute, the Fruits of our Labors Showcase Celebration. The VISTA helps maintain relationships with local community agencies to see how UNC students can meet their needs while enhancing their own academic experiences. In addition, the VISTA attends regional meetings with other NC Campus Compact VISTAs and Civic Engagement program staff in the Eastern Region and takes part in monthly Professional Development session with all of the NC Campus Compact AmeriCorps*VISTAs. 2008 – 2009 VISTA – Hillary Stoker What is AmeriCorps*VISTA? VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) was founded in 1964 as part of President Lynden Johnson's War on Poverty and became part of the AmeriCorps program in 1993. AmeriCorps*VISTA is a national service program upon which volunteers work for non-profit and government organizations that strive to bring people out of poverty. AmeriCorps*VISTA gives citizens the opportunity to make a full-time commitment to lessen poverty through the development of sustainable programs in local non-profit organizations. AmeriCorps*VISTA members commit to one year of service to promote positive growth in communities and are rewarded with a living allowance, health insurance and an education award or small cash stipend upon completion of their term.
