NC Campus Compact VISTAs
Carolyn is the 2009-2010 NC Campus Compact AmeriCorps*VISTA with the APPLES Service-Learning Program. Before coming to Chapel Hill, Carolyn attended Elon University graduating with a degree in Sociology with interest in Gender Studies and African-American Studies. During her time at Elon, Carolyn coordinated several Alternative Break Experiences; advised a student volunteer program (LINCS) and facilitated Academic Service-Learning courses.
This year at Chapel Hill, Carolyn will be advising student organizers in the Internships, Alternative Fall and Spring Break Experiences, and Service-Learning Initiative committees, as well as supporting the development of classroom-community partnerships through service-learning courses. She will also be working with Andy Petters to support the Service and Leadership Living-Learning Community, an opportunity for students to create a community dedicated to engaging in service and dialogue related to social justice, civic engagement, and leadership.
When she is not busy with work, Carolyn enjoys cooking, reading, live music and being outdoors.
Hillary was the 2008-2009 NC Campus Compact AmeriCorps*VISTA with the APPLES Service-Learning Program. Previous to her service in Chapel Hill, Hillary attended Elon University graduating with a degree in journalism. During her time at Elon, Hillary coordinated and coached youth soccer; worked with the Elon chapter of Habitat for Humanity; and participated in the Service Learning Community in which she coordinated numerous campus and community outreach programs as well as mentored and advised first year students.
Hillary advised student organizers in the Internships, Alternative Fall and Spring Breaks, and Service-Learning Initiative committees, as well as

When she is not busy with work, Hillary enjoys photography, reading, cooking, and spending time with her family and friends.
Before Joy moved to Chapel Hill, she lived in Rochester, NY where she worked with various community-based organizations and non-profits coordinating service-learning, youth development, peer education, and HIV/AIDS support programs; assisted with community outreach and education for Rochester's HIV Vaccine Trial Unit site; served on the Executive Board of the Rochester Area Task Force on AIDS. Joy completed her undergraduate degree in Social Work and Pre-Law in 2004 at Nazareth College, where she was part of NY Campus Compact and President of the Social Work Student Organization and the LGBTQ Alliance.
In her spare time, Joy likes to explore big cities and quiet mountains, write and perform slam poetry, and participate in grassroots organizing and activism.
Before employed with APPLES, Ashley received a degree in Public Relations with a concentration in Non-Profits from Appalachian State University. She spent a semester studying abroad at Middlesex University in London, England. During her time at Appalachian, Ashley was active in the A.C.T. (Appalachian Community Together) Service Office with the alternative spring break program and the NC-ACTS Americorps program in which she worked with a small, local nonprofit organization in Watauga County called the Mountain Alliance. Most recently Ashley finished up a summer position with Habitat for Humanity International with their Summer Youth Blitz Program. During her year of service with APPLES, Ashley concentrated her efforts on working with the Service and Leadership Living & Learning Community, alternative break trips, service-learning courses, and internships.
Ashley is originally from Schoolcraft, Michigan. She has two older siblings and is the aunt to two nephews and a niece. During her personal time Ashley loves to go camping, hiking, and climbing.
After graduating from Elon University, with a degree in corporate communication and sociology, Chris wanted to involve himself in post-graduate service. During his undergraduate years at Elon University, he was very involved in leadership opportunities such as the Student Government Association President and positions with Greek Life. He hails from Scituate, Massachusetts, and calls himself “quite a Red Sox and Patriots fan.” Chris also enjoys playing soccer and tennis.
