APPLES currently receives funding from three main sources: undergraduate student fees, state funds and private donations. Combined, these funds have allowed us to grow as an organization and strive toward our maximum impact. However, some of our programs cannot be fully funded by these sources, which imposes substantial financial hardship on our students and provides challenges for interested faculty members. Program Interest APPLES facilitates service-learning experiences for more than 1,300 students annually through ten innovative programs ranging from Social Entrepreneur Fellowships and Community-Based Research to the Service and Leadership Living and Learning Community and Global Service-Learning. This is an increase from 1093 students in 2005. Alternative Spring Break now travels to Mexico as well as the southeast region of the US and service-learning courses are being introduced in the natural science disciplines. Funding Priorities Global Service-Learning Scholarships: Students have the unique opportunity to work with global immigrant communities, while uniting rigorous academic coursework with substantive volunteer service. Upon returning to Carolina, students engage in local service-learning with newly arrived immigrants. There has been increasing interest from undergraduate students to not only experience studying abroad, but to take their experience to the next level by engaging in community-based learning through studying and working with the local culture. Need-based scholarship funds will provide opportunities for all students at Carolina to have the opportunity for this valuable experience. Faculty Development Initiatives: As the implementation of the new Experiential Education requirement of the Undergraduate Curriculum is underway, we anticipate an unprecedented need for course development funding to (1) support service-learning pedagogy across the curriculum as well as (2) help faculty build sustainable community partnerships. Support APPLES As an Alumnus or Friend of APPLES, you have helped to build the foundation for service-learning at Carolina.
