1990 – “Getting the a.p.p.l.e.s. Rolling.”
- The a.p.p.l.e.s. task force is formed in the April of 1990 with a make up of students, faculty, administrators and community representatives.
- The task force is led by Tony Deifell, student, Dr. Joel Schwartz, professor and Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning, Sonja Stone, professor, Janet Turchi, director of the Chapel Hill Head Start program, Peter Filene, professor, and Mike Steiner, student, Emily Lawson, student, Kas DeCarcalho, student, and Serena Willie, student.
- The a.p.p.l.e.s. task force members received its first grant of $5,000 from the Campus Outreach Opportunities League (COOL), a national service organization.
- This helped launch the program which started by identifying 5 to 10 classes at the University that already had service components and how to make these classes more effective.
