1991 – 1992

  • a.p.p.l.e.s. courses officially introduced in the fall of 1991 with the first four courses offered in the Spring of 1992.
  • “a.p.p.l.e.s. will be a catalyst for reforming the academic curriculum on this campus from a preoccupation with knowledge for knowledge’s sake to a philosophy of knowledge for life’s sake.” Dr. Sonja Stone

 

  • The UNC-system president decides to freeze the approved 90 cent increase in student fees that was previously approved to support the a.p.p.l.e.s. program.
  • a.p.p.l.e.s. is left to try and find money for a salary for the programs first coordinator, Denise Beal, in attempt to continue the advancement of the program

  • a.p.p.l.e.s. coordinator, Denise Beal, and many of the student leaders spent many cold days in the pit appeasing the student body to approach student congress to support the program.
  • Beal and the students urged the students to realize how this program would benefit their learning experiences as well as the surrounding community.

New a.p.p.l.e.s. coordinator ready to help faculty add class service component

  • The first coordinator of a.p.p.l.e.s. was hired in the fall of 1991 to help faculty participate in the program and initiate new classes. The duties included indentifying organizations for community placements, being a resource to inquisitive faculty, as well as integrating reflection into the classes in the spring of 1992.
  • This marked a major shift in the history of a.p.p.l.e.s. as the student-led program interviewed and hired a director to help run the office and provided continuity in the knowledge of the program.
