1998-1999
- Since the summer internships program began in 1995, it grew by three community placements and student participation doubled. This is just one example of how the period of the mid to late 1990s marked significant growth for APPLES.

- Under the guidance of a.p.p.l.e.s. coordinator, Mary Morrison, the program and its student leaders continued to strengthen its program and offerings as members of the UNC community began to see a.p.p.l.e.s. as the face of community service on campus.

- Thanks to a generous grant from Jim and Jean Ueltschi through the Office of the Provost, a.p.p.l.e.s. created Course Development Grants for faculty to develop service-learning courses.
- This was instrumental in the growth of a.p.p.l.e.s. as it provided a way for the program to give professors the resources to develop and teach a course for a minimum of three times over five years with the hopes and encouragement of creating long-lasting classes in the department.
- As a.p.p.l.e.s. approached its ninth year there were four strong programs, double the amount a few years earlier. During 1999, one organizer calculated the program had worked with over 700 students and 230 organizations across the state; an astounding growth from the first six classes in the spring semester of 1991.

- In 1999 there were internships offered both fall and spring semesters serving 16 community agencies. This was the only year when internships were offered both fall and spring semesters and only one of two years when internships would be offered in the fall. From 2000 on, only spring internships were offered during the school year.
