APPLES Fee Increase Worth It to Continue Worthwhile Program
Still Serving After All These Years After 10 years of serving the students in creating multiple service-learning classes and programs, APPLES planned a 10-year anniversary celebration to mark the achievements made by invested students, faculty, and supporting community partners. Huq appointed to APPLES Service-Learning Program director In the fall of 2002, Jenny Huq took over as interim director of APPLES, a role which she fully assumed in March of 2003. She had previously served as the Assistant Director since 2001 under Mary Morrison who served APPLES for seven great years. Community Calls for Service With the continued growth of APPLES, the community also continued to demonstrate the need for volunteers. In 2002, APPLES offered its most internships to date (17), serving 11 community agencies. There were 31 courses that assisted about 700 students in serving various community agencies in need.
An Alternative to the Usual With the popularity of its Alternative Spring Break trips, APPLES created the first Alternative Fall Break trip as another way to assist students in reaching out to neighboring communities. The first took 12 participants to Cherokee, NC to work on various service projects and become informed about the Cherokee’s native heritage and culture. APPLES Secures Permanent State Funding for Professional Staff Fall 2001 came with some increased support and stability for APPLES. Permanent funding was secured to pay the salaries of the director and assistant director, allowing the program to focus its student funds and other grants towards programming and development. |
