A.p.p.l.e.s. to APPLES

  • Between Spring 1999 and Fall 2000 APPLES shifted the writing of its name from a.p.p.l.e.s. to APPLES. In response, everyone who had written a.p.p.l.e.s. too many times gathered in the office and shouted “HOO-RAH” in unison as they could now just hit “Caps Lock” instead of typing a period after each letter.

APPLES Fee Increase Worth It to Continue Worthwhile Program

  • In its 10 th year now, APPLES proposed a referendum for increased student support to help the growth of the program. The increase brought student funds from $1.95 per semester to $3 per semester.
  • The increase was proposed not only to increase programming opportunities for students but to make up for funds that were set to be lost after the program received a three year grant from the center for public service.

Still Serving After All These Years

After 10 years of serving the students in creating multiple service-learning classes and programs, APPLES planned a 10-year anniversary celebration to mark the achievements made by invested students, faculty, and supporting community partners.

Huq appointed to APPLES Service-Learning Program director

In the fall of 2002, Jenny Huq took over as interim director of APPLES, a role which she fully assumed in March of 2003. She had previously served as the Assistant Director since 2001 under Mary Morrison who served APPLES for seven great years.

Community Calls for Service

With the continued growth of APPLES, the community also continued to demonstrate the need for volunteers. In 2002, APPLES offered its most internships to date (17), serving 11 community agencies. There were 31 courses that assisted about 700 students in serving various community agencies in need.

An Alternative to the Usual

With the popularity of its Alternative Spring Break trips, APPLES created the first Alternative Fall Break trip as another way to assist students in reaching out to neighboring communities. The first took 12 participants to Cherokee, NC to work on various service projects and become informed about the Cherokee’s native heritage and culture.

APPLES Secures Permanent State Funding for Professional Staff

Fall 2001 came with some increased support and stability for APPLES. Permanent funding was secured to pay the salaries of the director and assistant director, allowing the program to focus its student funds and other grants towards programming and development.
