Committee approves $4 hike in student fees for APPLES

  • The proposal for an increase in student fees was accepted and APPLES again gained increased financial security. The fee increase will be used to support student programs in efforts to serve as many students as possible by adding trips, increasing funds available for internships and meeting community needs through a developing community based research program.

APPLES Establishes Three-Year Partnership with VISTA Program

  • In the fall of 2005, APPLES established a partnership with the VISTA program to receive a recent college graduate for a one-year period as a third full-time staff member. This program allows APPLES to continue to expand its programming of the office tasks and explore new avenues for service-learning. This opportunity was made available through the university’s affiliation with North Carolina Campus Compact (www.elon.edu/nccc).

Increased Number of Courses Set to Meet New Experiential Education Requirement

  • The 2005-2006 academic year was highlighted by the most significant growth in the number service-learning courses offered in the program’s history. There were 65 courses taught, greatly exceeding the previous the previous high of 36 classes in 2003-2004 and 40 in 2001-2002.
  • This increase comes at a pivotal time for the program as new curriculum requirements for the class entering in the fall of 2006 will require students to participate in an experiential education program. Of the various options, the APPLES courses fulfill the requirement and will hopefully lead to a continuing increase in program participation.

APPLES Cabinet and Staff Plan for the Future

  • With the significant development of programs over the past decade, APPLES is continuously planning for the future. For the coming year, the staff and cabinet want to focus on faculty development, enhancing the organizer experience, leadership development within the program, and continuing to reconnect and strengthen bonds with alumni.
