Community Partners
Service-Learning Courses

Most community partners are involved with our service-learning courses program. Students enrolled in designated service-learning classes combine academic coursework with community service. The service experience is directly linked to the content of their course. As a part of the course, students commit to serving 3-5 hours a week for 10 weeks with a specific community partner.

While the benefits of having these students are great, they are most effective when they are integrated into the organization. This doesn’t happen by giving a student a pile of copying to do. It happens by the supervisor making a real effort to help the student understand the whole organization, and creating doable projects that really contribute something.

Fall 2009 Core Connections Breakfast

At the beginning of each semester, faculty and community partners engage in a dialogue to help build and prepare for a successful service-learning partnership. During the breakfast, community partners receive information from faculty regarding course goals and syllabus. In addition, faculty learn more about available service-learning experiences from the community partners.
