Pre-Departure Orientation

After applications have been turned in, a number of potential participants will be invited back for an interview. If selected, participants will be required to attend one brief pre-departure orientation to receive additional information and also meet the other members of their groups.

Service Experience
Participants of the Outer Banks trip focused on environmental service. This year’s group volunteered at the following places:

Reflections
At the 8:00 PM after each day of service, time was set aside to have a group reflection about the day’s experiences. Since APPLES is a service- learning organization, the learning experience that accompanies these reflections are a major focus of the trip.

Housing and Food
Participants stayed at the Adventure Bound Campsite 9 miles from Kitty Hawk, NC. Tents were borrowed and hot showers and bathrooms were available. Breakfast foods and snacks were brought in advance. Meals were generally sandwiches, or done in restaurants, or on the road.

Free Time
While service-learning was the focus of the trip, there was a fair amount of time for participants to just relax and get to know each other. Additionally, participants of the Outer Banks trip visited the beach and Jockey’s Ridge.

Post-Trip Follow-Up
After the trip, participants put together a short presentation about their experiences to show to the other alternative fall break trip groups.
