When do I apply to participate in AFB?
Applications for Alternative Fall Break are available on the APPLES website in early September. The application deadline is mid September.

When are the applicant interviews for AFB?
AFB applicant interviews are in late September.

When will I find out if I have been selected for an AFB trip?
AFB participants are notified of their acceptance in the beginning of October.

Where are the AFB trip destinations?
When applying, students indicate a preference for the Washington, D.C., Hendersonville, NC, the Outer Banks program, or the Pembroke, NC program. In D.C., AFB participants work on urban problems such as homelessness and poverty. Those on the Outer Banks trip address environmental issues. Those attending the trip to Hendersonville will work with migrant farm workers. Those on the Pembroke, NC program address Native American health issues.

How many students are selected for each AFB trip?
Each AFB trip has two student leaders and 11 participants.

Who are the leaders of the AFB trips?
APPLES selects two students based on their experience with alternative breaktrips, as well as their leadership qualities.

Do we drive our personal vehicles on this trip?
No. APPLES secures University vans for all of the AFB trips. The student leaders also serve as van drivers.

How much does the AFB trip cost?
A $25 deposit is required after participants have been selected.

Do I receive academic credit for participating in AFB?
No academic credit is awarded for participation in Alternative Fall Break.

What are the APPLES requirements for participation in AFB?
Prior to the trip, Alternative Fall Break participants attend workshops designed to prepare them for challenges they may confront while at the trip destinations. In addition, AFB participants attend a reflection session and prepare a formal presentation in the latter part of the fall semester.
