There is an urgent need to improve health services in rural China because there still exists a large disparity between rural and urban health status. The Jamkhed model was initiated forty years ago to provide health care to rural communities that emphasizes on full community involvement and a multi-sectional approach to health care. I will be working with Jamkhed in rural India for an internship and residential program for medical and allied health students to study the community-based primary health care model. After that, I will be going to a small village in rural China to study the general status of access to health care. The final goal is to produce a policy recommendation to integrate the Jamkhed model Pingle, a rural village in China. This project allows me to work with a renowned public health organization and observe the mechanism of the innovative community-based health care model. Also, I will learn community assessment methods in public health, ethnographic research methods and further my observation to produce a policy recommendation that transfers this successful model to another area, which is potentially applicable to other rural communities as well.
