Haley Koch Year: Sophomore Email:haleykoch@gmail.com Project: Without Walls Community Partner: St Joseph CME Church
Without Walls is a program aimed at fostering ties between UNC and the Northside Community. It aims to bring youth back into the community to foster their education and empowerment. This will entail a multi-pronged approach using technology, volunteer support, and performance as cornerstones to the program. Currently, computer resources for an onsite digital reading program are being developed for the children of the Northside Community. Furthermore, volunteer supported education projects will come in the form of tutoring, mentoring, and pre-college preparations for the youth.
Allison Young Year: Sophomore Email:aryoung@email.unc.edu Project: Journal for the Arts Community Partner: Ackland Art Museum
This project aims to create an art magazine that will enrich the education of students at UNC as well as promote the artistic endeavors of individuals within Chapel Hill and its surrounding communities. Currently, there are no student publications that focus solely on the arts at UNC, and thus this journal will work to feature art from across a multitude of media, including: two and three dimensional arts, performance arts, music, dance, and film. Each issue will profile student artists and their works, allowing them to include text describing their visions. Feature articles will deal with a variety of topics ranging from personal reactions to specific art works or performances to current social issues or topics of social justices represented in art.
