What is the Social Entrepreneur Fellowship (SEF) Program? The SEF Program offer grants of up to $1,500 to UNC undergraduates who create sustainable, entrepreneurial projects that address an identifiable community need.
I’m interested in applying for the SEF Program. What are the steps in doing so? Students applying for the SEF Program need to:
Assess community needs and develop a sustainable entrepreneurial project that addresses those needs
Collaborate with a community partner and develop a detailed plan of action.
Develop a detailed and accurate budget for your project.
Submit a complete application to APPLES by 5:00 p.m. on October 12, 2007.
What do I include in the SEF application? After a community need is identified, the application packet must include:
A proposal
Funding Request Form
Resume
Community Partner Agreement
How many students are selected for the SEF Program? Up to five Fellowships are awarded each fall.
How long does the SEF Program last?
Fellows implement their projects in the summer and fall following the completion of the required Social Venture course.
Do I receive academic credit for participation in the SEF Program? Yes. Fellows enroll in PLCY 326, "Social Ventures" in the spring. In conjunction with the Entrepreneurship Minor in the Economics department, this course is integrated as the academic requirement for all Social Entrepreneur Fellows.
If selected for the SEF Program, are there additional requirements for receiving academic credit?
Yes. Fellows participate in monthly reflection sessions, submit monthly financial reports and also present a final report and presentation upon completion of their project at the end of the fall semester.
