"Our group spent a night in this rural community called El Gusano. I asked these children for their permission to take a photograph during recess, and a classmate pointed out the symbolism of this image. So many people in the United States have built fences and maintained an “us” versus “them” mentality with respect to immigrants. Worse still, is when people observe others as if they were some spectacle or exhibition. These children are not animals in a zoo waiting to be watched; they are people with a future ahead of them. I hope that this photograph makes a lasting impression on how we ought not to picture our neighbors. On the other side of the fences, walls, and boundaries we have created are real people. Let us not forget that."
