Fall 2006 Service Experience

East
Chapel Hill High School
Collaborating Teacher: Lauren Vesilind, ESL
Meeting Time : Tuesday or Wednesday afternoons at East Chapel Hill High School
Time: 3-4 pm – Mentors and students work collaboratively on photo narrative; 4-5 pm – Tutoring on student’s homework

Each student serves as a Mentor to an immigrant or refugee student or students of Latino origin, meeting each week for 13-14 weeks. They develop mentoring relationships with the high school students as well as help to develop (English) and validate (Spanish) students’ language and literacy skills. In addition, UNC mentors develop a photo narrative story, throughout the semester, that touches on one or more migration transition themes and will be included in a handbook of reflections on global-local service-learning experiences.
