Service-Learning Initiative
FAQ's

When does SLI take place?
SLI begins Wednesday evening, three days before students would normally move in on Saturday, and ends on Friday afternoon. Check-in is Wednesday evening, before dinner, and the students will be notified of when and where this will take place upon acceptance to the program.

Will I be staying with all the other participants in one dorm?
No, each student will move into the dorm that they have been assigned to by the Housing Department.

What does the $60 non-refundable check cover?
Each participant’s contribution of $60 covers 6 meals (dinner on Wednesday, all meals on Thursday, and breakfast and lunch on Friday), an SLI t-shirt, transportation to and from the service sites, and social activities.

Do I have to go to all three community service sites?
Yes, each participant is required to attend all three service sites.

What kind of work will I be doing at the sites?
The community service each participant will be doing varies. Students may be outdoors or indoors and their work may entail gardening, cleaning, or working directly with people.

What if my dorm is under construction or will not open with the other dorms? Can I still participate in the SLI program?
Unfortunately, APPLES can not move a student to another dorm for the three days. You are welcome to apply to SLI, but you must contact the Housing Department yourself to find out what they can do for you.

Can I move into my dorm the night before SLI starts?
No, housing does not permit any SLI student to move in before the Wednesday in which the program begins.
