The Service-Learning Initiative (SLI) is a unique program that provides incoming first-year students with an introduction to the many diverse service opportunities in the local area. SLI brings together eligible students who are committed to making a difference in the local community through service.
What to Expect
The 2008 Service-Learning Initiative will take place on August 13-15. Over the course of these days, students will volunteer with three different community partners. The program includes social activities, reflection sessions, six meals and an SLI t-shirt. In addition, students will be able to establish friendships and familiarize themselves with their new campus community before classes begin.

Reflection
The program will incorporate two reflection sessions—one after the first day of service work and another at the end of the program. These sessions allow participants to examine, through group discussion, what it means to “help others.” Rather than speak strictly from our own perspectives and experiences, we will explore questions relevant to our position as volunteers. SLI hopes to equip participants with a way to examine how and why we choose to volunteer.
Continuing Service
Throughout the school year, participants will be given the chance to return to certain communities partners. SLI will host Continuing Service on a regular basis in order to sustain service work, reflection sessions and friendships. Stay posted for updates!
