The Spring 2010 Internship Sites have been listed in alphabetical order. Please be advised that most placements require a car for transportation; this information can be found within the agencies' applications. Also, schedules within the placements may vary; once selected as an intern this will be discussed in further detail.

Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Campaign for NC

ABOUT THE AGENCY: APPCNC provides training and resources to professionals statewide who work in teen pregnancy prevention or teen parent support. We educate service providers on science-based practices for effective teen pregnancy prevention; gather and disseminate statistical information necessary to design effective youth development programs; educate public officials on how government can enhance community efforts to prevent teen pregnancy; and assist individual counties in mobilizing human financial resources to reduce local teen pregnancy rates.

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION: The goals of this internship are that the intern will gain an understanding of the impact of state policy on the health of NC adolescents, particularly in the area of teen pregnancy. They will assist with the work of the Adolescent Youth Advocacy Council. There will also be administrative help needed as we plan for our 25th Anniversary a year long celebration starting in January 2010. Our expectations are that the intern will function as a member of APPCNC's staff; APPCNC in turn will keep in mind that the intern also has school responsibilities, and has the right to reasonable flexibility regarding scheduling, etc.

The ArtsCenter

ABOUT THE AGENCY: Since its inception in 1975, The ArtsCenter has worked to nourish the arts, community, and creativity
through education, performance and exhibition. The ArtsCenter has grown from a single painting course to an all lncluslve visual and performing arts center. offering a multitude of programs.

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION: The intern would research the ArtsCenter's options for Increasing the accessibility of our facilities and programs to persons with disabilities in the community, with the stated mission to identify best practices to suggest as models for
accessibility.

BounceBack Kids

ABOUT THE AGENCY: BounceBack Kids offer a variety of activities and programs, including a group sports program (basketball and fitness training), an individual sports program (basketball and fitness training), recreational and social activities, a College Planning Guide and support services. To be eligible for our program, a child must be between the ages of 3-21 (chronologically and developmentally), have a serious medical condition, and have a doctor's permission to participate in physical activities.

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION: What the intern will focus on will depend largely on his/her interests. Possibilities include: (1) working with the Outreach Coordinator to strengthen outreach to health-care providers and school personnel as well as expand outreach to include clergy. (2) Working on Public Relations. This would include writing and editing our e-mail newsletter and possibly developing additional brochures and/or fliers. (3) Working on a new Family Support Program, pending receipt of grant funds. (4) Evaluating what supplementary support services we might offer, such as yard work, house cleaning, transportation assistance. (5) Planning program activities for the children.

Genesis Home

ABOUT THE AGENCY: Genesis Home works to end homelessness for families with children and young adults by providing housing and supportive services to foster independence.

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION: The intern's responsibilities will include increasing and improving communication with current supporters, broadening the agency's database and improving their visibility to the entire community.

NC Office on Disability and Health (NCDOH)

ABOUT THE AGENCY: Increase the state’s capacity to conduct epidemiological planning that is inclusive of persons with disabilities; Identify opportunities for ensuring the inclusion of persons with disabilities in state and community public health initiatives and interventions; Foster greater emphasis on and engagement in health promotion activities among person with disabilities, families and care providers; Emphasize the role of the environment in facilitating or hindering access to care and health promotion activities; and Affect policy and practices in the areas of accessible environments, livable communities, health promotion, and healthcare access.

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION: The intern will assist with the development, implementation and evaluation of the women’s night out educational program at Orange Enterprises Inc in Hillsborough; assist with compilation of the project data, including a summary of the women’s follow through with recommended screenings; and
assist with the linkage between Wake Technical Community College radiography program and compensatory education program students.

North Carolina Botanical Garden

ABOUT THE AGENCY: NCBG is a conservation garden that is committed to educating the public about plants of North Carolina and the need to protect natural habitats. The Garden supports UNC classes and research projects, offers school programs, including
guided tours, science training for teachers, and summer camps, provides horticultural therapy services, hosts and
provides facility services for community groups including horticulture, conservation, ecology and allied health groups and organizations. The Garden is active in conservation organizations and professional associations.

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION: Primary responsibilities will be :in event management. The NCBG has opened an new Education Center, unique in it's garden setting and offering rental spaces, including classrooms, auditorium, exhibit hall, and an outdoor garden/patio. These spaces will be available for facility use by mission-based conservation/environmental education programs,
meetings and conferences. Intern will assist in the facility management and coordination of the facility's use, to include
conference planning, booking and scheduling, meeting with clients, facility set-up, catering, etc.

North Chatham School

ABOUT THE AGENCY: North Chatham is a K-8 public school that serves a wide socio-economic student population. We are also experiencing strong growth in our Hispanic/Latino population. We are hoping to be able to offer tutorial services to students currently below grade level during the day and after school. We are also hoping to be able to better reach out and communicate with our non-English speaking parents and non-fluent students.

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION: Interns would interns would work closely with teachers to implement specific mini-lessons to assist students in groups no larger than five students to help remediate previously covered skills in reading, writing and math. Interns would also serve as mentors to students on campus during their time with the student(s) each afternoon. Interns, capable of assisting with translation, would be used to hold conferences, translate class materials, and possibly mentor students after school to help with school.

Orange County Economic Development

ABOUT THE AGENCY: The Economic Development department work with agricultural and non-agricultural communities to increase awareness of farm enterprise opportunities and the benefits of farms in our communities.

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION: The intern will work on a local farm to fork project through grant funding from the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project and the Tobacco Trust Fund.

Piedmont Wildlife Center

ABOUT THE AGENCY: The Piedmont Wildlife Center serves as a hub for knowledge distribution throughout the Triangle area about wildlife, its need for protection and rehabilitation. An emphasis is put on the education and knowledge of species found in, and migrating through North Carolina. The Piedmont Wildlife Center’s mission is “To support native North American wildlife through rehabilitation, education, and scientific study, with emphasis given to the conservation of wildlife and its habitat in North Carolina.”

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION: The intern will assist with our on-site education programs including school programs, intersession camps and home school group visits. New programs are being developed for all of our on-site education programs and the intern will assist in developing new curriculum. The intern will also work directly with the children attending the programs by assisting the instructor with games, hikes and activities. The intern will also be responsible for care and feeding of the animals we use in education programs.

Another major responsibility for the intern will be assisting with the planning and implementation of our annual Festival for Wildlife that will take place in May of 2010. Responsibilities would include scheduling of exhibits and programs for the event as well as helping to secure vendors, preparing signs, assisting with mailings and the general logistics for the event.

Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival of Music and Dance

ABOUT THE AGENCY: The main mission of the organization is to create a rich and diverse cultural music and art experience for all ages, deepen community actions and to provide an engine for positive social change. As a volunteer organization the various events at Shakori Hills require involvement from community members of all sorts. The festival provides an opportunity for local community members to work together to create community building experiences.

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION: The main responsibility of the intern will be the continuation of the music in the schools program (The Hopes & Dreams Program) which started 2 years ago. The main duty of the intern will be to connect local schools with musicians and to set up workshops and other musical experiences for schools within Chatham, Orange and Durham Counties.

Shodor Education Foundation

ABOUT THE AGENCY: Shodor is a nonprofit organization serving students and educators by providing materials and instruction relating to computational science (scientific, interactive computing). Shodor is transforming learning through computational thinking. Shodor offers workshops, apprenticeships and internships for youth and teens to build excitement for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through interactive explorations using hands-on and computer-enhanced activities, giving them the experience they will need to pursue a technology-intensive career path.

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION: Interns work throughout the year developing, testing, and teaching with Shodor's award-winning curriculum materials. In addition, they mentor Shodor apprentices. Applicants may be current majors or demonstrate ability in one or more areas of science (chemistry, physics, biology, engineering, etc.) and/or computer science/information technologies and/or science or mathematics education.

Southern Coalition for Social Justice

ABOUT THE AGENCY: The Southern Coalition for Social Justice promotes justice by empowering minority and low-income communities to defend and advance their political, social and economic rights. We use the combined skills of lawyers, social scientists, community organizers and media experts to help underrepresented people develop strategies to achieve their visions for themselves and their communities, incorporating an international human rights perspective and linking their efforts to broader processes of political, legal, social and economic change in the South.

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION: The Media and Communications intern will learn about the cases and projects SCSJ is working on and use media tools to promote and advance the cases. Intern may draft press releases, create a series of blogs, a flier, a YouTube video, will meet with clients to determine the best media tools to use for their particular situation.

Sustain Foundation

ABOUT THE AGENCY: Sustain Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit based in Carrboro, North Carolina with a dynamic mission to create and implement specific sustainable solutions to health, education and environmental issues through linking global and local community networks. With guiding principles of building community-based participatory programs that facilitate partnerships and promote positive mutual exchange, Sustain Foundation seeks to improve well-being in an action-oriented, meaningful, sustainable manner.

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION: As a part-time “Local Operating Director,” the intern will have hands-on learning experiences that will both expand his/her knowledge and skills in community non-profit management as well as make important contributions to the organization’s specific programs through day to day contributions to central operations. The intern will support the organization's operations, and will provide support to the diverse local programs of Sustain Foundation including the Trail Guide, Team Sakina, and Saludamos. The intern will act as a liaison between board members and program members, as well as represent the organization in strategic community partnerships. Gaining a “behind the scenes” experience into how a non-profit organization develops and maintains programs to serve the community- the intern will assist in areas such as maintaining financial records and being informed of Sustain Foundation’s legal compliance. The intern will help each program with long-term strategic planning, as well as implementation of shorter-term goals. The intern will serve an important need within the organization as well as be able to spend time on programs that most interest him/her.

ABOUT THE AGENCY: The Stone House integrates 3 traditions: places for spiritual retreat that quiet the soul, the lineage of movement-building centers that have transformed this country, and a sustainable relationship with the land. We build stronger social change organizations and leaders through our space, land and programs, supporting movement-building work, primarily in North Carolina and the Southeast and training leaders in our spiritual activism curriculum. We also provide opportunities for people to deepen through retreat, ritual and practice and offer a culture of radical hospitality. We manage a farm to grow food that people want to eat and work to engage people in educational, spiritual and organizing programming on food and food justice

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION: The intern will participate in two projects, focused creating strategies and multimedia for outreach. The first will use existing and new video footage to develop a short (5-7 minute) video on the work of The Stone House. They will also develop an outreach strategy for each of our programs, communicating the essence of the programs and finding the appropriate outlets for publicizing the offerings.

Second, the Stone House currently has over 200 “Friends” – people who have made a 5-year commitment to our success through financial or volunteer contribution. Many are also very involved in our programming. We want to do a series of profiles of 15-20 Friends – their individual story, why they give to The Stone House, what they are most passionate about here. These would be in a multimedia form.

UNC Campus Y

ABOUT THE AGENCY: Through student dedication and commitment, the Y is a leader in on-campus discussion and dialogue and off-campus service and activism. The Campus Y hosts 21 committees that focus on a particular social justice issue. Issues range from mentoring local elementary school children to advocating criminal justice awareness. Most committees combine service with advocacy efforts. Many of these committees focus on campus issues; others focus on the surrounding community, while others focus on global concerns.

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION: The intern would work with Y staff and student leadership to develop more systematic and meaningful assessment tools and practices, including tracking student participation; the impact of the Y on student development; and the impact of the student committees and membership on the communities they serve. The intern would also begin conducting research on the effect of the Y on student learning, its role in non-formal and informal learning; its role in international education on campus; and its career development/school-to-work transition value.

The Women’s Center

ABOUT THE AGENCY: The Women's Center promotes the individual and collective empowerment of the diverse community of women and girls in the Triangle. The Women's Center provides programs/ services in the following areas: legal, career, financial, home ownership, adolescent, workshops and groups, and resources and referrals.

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION: The intern will assist supervisor with various aspects of the financial and housing programs including marketing, outreach, administrative tasks, home buyer education, and program and grant research. Specific projects may include conducting follow-up calls to clients, preparing marketing materials, facilitating and/or teaching workshops, etc.
