Blue Ribbon Mentor-Advocate Program About the agency: Blue Ribbon works to establish supportive relationships between adults and children to broaden children’s visions of the future consequently helping them reach their fullest academic, physical, emotional and social potential. The Blue Ribbon Youth Leadership mission is to provide leadership training and service learning opportunities to minority students. The Blue Ribbon Mentor-Advocate serves high school youth through the Blue Ribbon Youth Leadership Institute. This program trains youth in leadership skills and encourages them to put their leadership skills into practice by completing service projects in the community. This program consists of a summer camp, monthly service-learning projects, and a book and school year club. Blue Ribbon Mentor-Advocate targets African-American and Latino students who attend the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools. Students enter the program in fourth grade and continue involvement through high school. Many students come from economically challenged or single-parent homes. Some students are underperforming in school or need additional support in other areas of development. Internship Description: The intern would provide program support to the Blue Ribbon High School Specialist by coordinating the annual spring break service-learning trip and coordinating spring service project for the Youth Leadership Institute clubs at the high schools. An intern would coordinate the entire trip by arranging transportation, accommodations, service projects, college tours and enrichment and social activities. Other responsibilities would include coordinating local service projects and facilitating YLI club meetings. The intern would also serve as a role model to minority students with leadership potential. These and all other responsibilities will be negotiated with the Blue Ribbon High School Specialist and based on the intern’s interests. Skills Needed: Experience working with youth and interest working with high school students. The intern should be energetic, creative, and willing to seek new opportunities. We also would like someone who has participated in leadership development programs, either as provider or recipient. Spanish fluency is desired but not required.
