Health, Hoops, and Hope – formerly Hoop Dreams

About the agency: Health, Hoops, and Hope [H 3] provides recreational opportunities and social support for children with serious medical conditions and their families. H 3 typically holds group basketball sessions twice/month and group fitness once/month. H 3 frequently offers other activities, including but not limited to: hip-hop dance; trips to sports, museums, and other local child-friendly institutions; parties; and cooking.

Internship Description: H 3 seeks to increase the number of children who participate in the program. Because of privacy laws, H 3 generally may not directly contact families of children with serious medical conditions. Instead, H 3 must inform those who work directly with this population (such as health care professionals and school personnel) about our programs and ask them to inform their patients/clients/ students and their parents about us and/or distribute our literature for us. Accordingly, H 3 would like the intern to develop an outreach program targeted to professionals who work with children who are ill. Additionally, H 3 is currently considering additional ways we can serve our families by adding new types of programs such as:

  1. providing respite for parents of our children with serious medical conditions by training sitters to understand these children’s conditions, so parents feel comfortable leaving their child with such sitters

  2. offering an on-call service that would have trained volunteers available to help families when a child unexpectedly needs to go to the hospital (typically by helping out with care-giving and transportation of other children in the family)

  3. establishing a creative arts program that would offer group sessions for art, music, and/or drama

Skills Needed: MS Office, particularly Word, Excel, and Publisher. Ability to perform Internet-based research

Majors of Interest: Social Work, Psychology, Health Care, or a general interest in Non-profit work

Transportation Needed: A car is not necessary for the intern projects, but intern is asked to attend at least one Saturday basketball/fitness program in Durham.
