About the agency: Piedmont Wildlife is a non-profit organization located in Durham County, whose mission is to support native North American wildlife through rehabilitation, education, and scientific study, with emphasis given to conservation of wildlife and its habitat in North Carolina. Our education program addresses the need in our area for students to understand the range of options open to them when encountering wildlife and the potential need for wildlife rescue. The Piedmont Wildlife Center has a goal to reach the residents of NC with the message that there are actions they can take to make a positive difference to wildlife, their environment, and ultimately themselves and humankind.

Internship Description: The intern will work in our education department to:

  1. increase awareness of wildlife problems in our area

  2. become fluent in the goals of the education program [i.e. “wildlife belong in the wild and do not make good pets” and “an understanding of when an animal needs help and when it is best left alone”]

  3. be able to present materials in an exciting way to K-12 students and the general public, including pre/post-tests and a presentation using live animals

  4. assist in preparation of and participate in the Walk for Wildlife in April 2008

Skills Needed: Computer proficiency. Good verbal and written communication skills.

Majors of Interest: Education, Natural or Social Sciences, Liberal Arts

Transportation Needed: Car
