About the agency: The mission of NCBG is to inspire understanding, application, and conservation of plants in gardens and natural areas and to advance a sustainable relationship between people and plants.

 

Internship Description: This internship will support the Horticulture department at NCBG in numerous ways including but not restricted to garden maintenance, plant propagation and invasive exotics removal. This support will help provide a beautiful setting for the public to learn about southeastern plants and plant communities, sustainable gardening, and conservation of our plant communities and resources. The plant propagation aspect of this position will also produce native plants to be sold for use in home gardens. The primary goal of this position is to support the mission of the Garden by assisting in the maintenance of landscapes and the nursery and in propagation of native plants. A secondary but important goal is to learn about sustainable gardening methods and about the southeastern flora. Projects might include garden bed renovations and basic maintenance, propagation of various native plants, and invasive exotic removal in both garden spaces and surrounding natural areas. The intern may also participate in occasional special projects such as plant reintroduction for purposes of restoration, seed collecting, or work projects in our natural areas.

 

Skills Needed: The ability to perform physical labor out of doors despite summer temperatures is necessary. Experience with plants and gardening and a strong environmental ethic are preferred though not required.

 

Concentrations of Interest: The intern will acquire a familiarity with southeastern native plants and with sustainable gardening methods. They will also learn some basics of plant propagation and nursery maintenance. Conservation, Horticulture, Environmental Studies.

 

Transportation Needed: None, just the ability to get to/from the site.
