Start date: June 2, 2008

About the agency: Student Action with Farmworkers is a non-profit organization whose mission is to bring students and farmworkers together to learn about each other’s lives, share resources and skills, improve conditions for farmworkers, and build diverse coalitions working for social change. SAF has been building student-farmworker solidarity since 1992. SAF works with students, who need connections to progressive social movements; farmworkers, one of societies most marginalized populations; as well as farmworker agencies and community groups, which need greater human resources to carry out their work.

Internship Description: Into the Fields (ITF) interns will help address basic farmworker needs such as; access to bilingual health care resources, and culturally appropriate health education; access to legal rights information; and will help address issues such as poor housing conditions, unsafe labor practices, and general human rights violations. During the summer, students can choose to participate in a documentary or theater project. Documentary interns document the lives of farmworkers. These documentaries are later used for educational purposes. Interns interested in Protest Theater can be a part of the Levante Theater group, which travels to farmworker camps and performs a play. Interns may be asked to do specific projects for the organizations at which they are placed.
