Student U – 3 positions 3601 Ridge Road Durham, NC
Start date: June 2, 2008
About the agency: The mission of Student U. is twofold: to inspire Durham middle school students to believe that they can succeed in an academic environment and to motivate college students to pursue careers in public education. Student U. has two main components: The first is a free, 6-week academically intense summer enrichment program in which Durham middle school students are taught and led by Triangle area college students at Durham Academy. The second component sustains the summer academic growth through weekly tutoring and monthly mentoring outings, both also led by the college-age teachers.
Internship Description: An APPLES intern will serve as a Student U. teacher. This teacher will be responsible for teaching two sections of one core academic class (math, science, English, or Global Connect) as well as teaching one elective class completely designed by the intern based on his or her passions. The inter will work with mentor teachers, certified teachers from the Durham Public Schools and Durham Academy, to create curriculum and write lesson plans for his or her classes and will be supported throughout the summer experience by these mentors as well as the Student U.
