SURGE PO Box 1188 Chapel Hill, NC
Start date: June 1, 2008
About the agency: SURGE is a multi-issue coalition of progressive student organizations and a resource center for student activism. Our mission is to connect and support student organizations that are working toward progressive social and political change. SURGE makes contacts with student organizations in North Carolina that are working on issues such as labor rights, the environment, immigration, peace, and other social causes. We then work with these organizations to help support their work. We give grants to groups to do events and take trips, as well as provide organizing training and resources. We act as a clearinghouse for groups to contact each other. We also organize an annual conference where students can meet each other and learn about each others' work.
Internship Description: Because students are not in classes during the summer, we focus on building organizational resources and preparing for the fall semester of recruitment. We need help with researching schools and student groups around the state to identify students who could use our resources. Our expectations are that the intern be self-motivated and able to work independently. Our goal is that s/he make a significant contribution to our organizational infrastructure and plans for the upcoming year. Some projects include helping us build our media library of books, films, and audio that are available, planning our annual film series that showcases films from the library and finding local organizations to collaborate on film showings, researching grants that we can apply to for additional funding, working to develop our website (blog and wiki) resources, and organizing educational events for the coming year.
Skills Needed: Intern should be proficient with MS Office. Web design skills preferred but not required.
Concentrations of Interest: Our intern would learn about event organizing, coalition outreach, recruitment, and fundraising. All majors or programs are encouraged to apply.
Transportation Needed: None, just the ability to get to/from the site To obtain contact information for the current Internships Chair, please refer to the APPLES' Organizers directory. |
