Internship Sites

When do I apply to become a summer internship site? Applications for summer internship sites are posted on the APPLES website in early October. The application deadline is late October. The application deadline will be posted with the application and accompanying documents.

When will I find out if I have been selected as an internship site?
All potential summer internship sites will be notified of their standing early December.

How much is the Summer Internship Program stipend?
Internship sites and the APPLES Service-Learning Program each contribute $1,250 per intern, for a total of a $2,500 internship stipend.

When can I expect to receive a check for APPLES’ half of the stipend?
Internship sites will receive APPLES’ half of the stipend after the internship begins. Interns are to be paid on the host organization’s biweekly or monthly payroll.

Do interns receive academic credit for the Summer Internship Program?
Yes. Interns receive 3.0 hours of graded academic credit for the Summer Internship Program during the fall semester. To earn academic credit for the internship, interns must maintain frequent contact with their faculty advisor, complete assigned readings, and submit a final paper. Each intern’s course requirements are determined on an individual basis by the intern and faculty advisor.

When do I apply to become a summer intern?
Applications for the Summer Internship Program are posted on the APPLES website in mid-January. The application deadline is early February. Continue to check the APPLES website for the application posting.

How many hours is a summer intern expected to work?
APPLES summer interns work a total of 320 hours over the course of the summer. Generally, interns work 40 hours per week for a total of 8 weeks, although this schedule may vary depending on the needs of the internship site and the intern.

How much is the Summer Internship Program stipend?

Do I receive academic credit for the Summer Internship Program?
Yes. Interns receive 3.0 hours of graded academic credit for the Summer Internship Program during the fall semester. Am I expected to find my own faculty advisor for the Summer Internship Program?
Yes. Selected interns are expected to find a faculty advisor for their summer internship. You may contact any professor, as your advisor need not be from your major department. The advisor is responsible for identifying the course number for the intern’s independent study credit, registering the intern for the fall semester and awarding 3.0 hours of graded credit at the end of the fall semester.

Can a graduate student, instead of a faculty advisor, supervise my summer internship?
Yes, in some instances, graduate students advise interns. However, the graduate student may not be able to award the academic credit. In this instance, the graduate student arranges for a faculty member in the same department to award the credit in the fall semester.

In addition to the academic requirements, are there APPLES requirements for the Summer Internship Program?
Yes. Interns are expected to participate in a Midsummer Reflection that takes place on a Saturday in June. Interns will also be required to make a final presentation in the fall semester. This can be an oral or tabletop presentation.
