Step 4: UNC-Chapel Hill Selection Process
Applications and supporting documents, if any, are received electronically
and reviewed by the Office of Human Resources. All applications
received during the posting period are reviewed, and those meeting
the minimum education and experience requirements are forwarded,
along with any supplemental documents, to the hiring department.
You can view pending job applications and submit addendums to
positions for which you have applied by using “My Job Applications.”
The hiring department reviews the forwarded applications and
selects applicants to interview. Departments cannot select a candidate
before the closing date for the position. Applicants will be contacted
directly by the hiring department. Interviews are generally conducted
either by phone or in person, and there may be more than one round
of interviews for a given position.
Hiring departments will conduct reference checks before an offer
is extended. Credentials will be verified either during the hiring
process or the probationary period.
When the hiring department selects a final candidate for a position,
the University will complete a criminal conviction check prior
to the candidate’s first scheduled day of work. A criminal
conviction does not in and of itself prevent an applicant from
being employed by the University. The nature of some convictions,
however, may cause certain positions to be unavailable to you.
Failure to completely disclose information about a criminal conviction
on an employment application is considered falsification of the
employment application and will result in the applicant not being
eligible for employment at the University.
The selected candidate will receive an offer for the position,
including salary and recommended start date. The offer normally
is made by the Employment, Classification & Compensation Specialist
in the Office of Human Resources. However, some departments have
been approved to make the offer directly to the selected candidate.
If the offer is accepted, selected candidates who are not currently
SPA employees at the University will be scheduled for a Job Offer
Acceptance Session with the Office of Human Resources, which will
occur either on or before the candidate’s first day of employment.
At this session, the new employee will sign his/her application
materials, review and sign the Conditions of Employment, submit
employment eligibility identification (Federal I-9 form), receive
certain University policy information and learn about New Employee
Orientation.
NOTE: Effective
Jan. 1, 2007, in compliance with North Carolina law, immediately
after hiring, the University will verify each new employee's legal
status or authorization to work in the United States using the
U.S. Department of Homeland Security's E-Verify Program. An
individual's employment will be terminated if they fail to comply
with the employment authorization requirements or if it is determined
that they are not authorized to work in the United States.
