African Studies Center

African Studies Center LogoEstablished in September 2005, the African Studies Center (ASC) is the newest of UNC's Area Studies Centers and is one of 11 Africa National Resource Centers in the country. The creation and establishment of a new NRC in African Studies has meant tremendous changes across campus as faculty and students have learned of resources and programs that did not exist before. During the 2006-07 academic year, the Director and Associate Director met with Africa-oriented faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences and with faculty and students from many of the professional schools, generating energy, interest, and creative strategies for new projects and collaborations in African Studies.

The ASC sponsors activities that bring together interested faculty and students from throughout the University to address issues related to the African continent. Among our principle topical areas of focus are democratization, development, health, and gender.
