The Carolina Center for the Study of the Middle East and Muslim Civilizations, established in 2003, works collaboratively with the Duke Islamic Studies Center and the Middle East Studies Program at NCSU. Collectively, these three centers form the Triangle Center for Middle East Studies.
CCSMEMC promotes understanding of the Middle East through teaching, research, and community outreach. Its special emphasis on cross-regional approaches supports a full range of traditional Middle East Studies, including the region's non-Muslim peoples and civilizations, while at the same time broadening the focus to include Muslim peoples and civilizations outside of the traditional area studies limits. It coordinates research projects and academic exchange, provides teaching resources, and sponsors programs, while also serving as a clearinghouse for Middle East-related events throughout the North Carolina Triangle universities.
