LAC for Instructors

The continuing success of UNC's LAC Program stems from the commitment and involvement of both faculty members and graduate students.

Graduate Students

The LAC Program provides graduate students a number of opportunities, including a Graduate Certificate, semester TAships, and pedagogy workshops.

Students interested in strengthening their marketability on the academic job market can pursue the new Graduate Certificate in LAC Instruction, the only professional training program in LAC pedagogy offered nationwide. The certificate provides a means for graduate students from all disciplines to demonstrate interdisciplinary and multilingual teaching expertise. For more details, follow the link below.

The majority of UNC's LAC discussion sections are led by graduate TAs. LAC TAships allow advanced graduate students to teach in a uniquely interdisciplinary context and establish professional relationships with faculty and students across campus. LAC TAs are hired each semester on a per course basis. Information on the responsibilities and application procedure for LAC TAs can be found by clicking on the most recent Call for TAs below.

Each year, the LAC Program also offers at least one Pedagogy Workshop, generally held during the spring semester. Participation in these workshops is especially recommended for graduate students interested in applying for LAC TAships. Faculty

The LAC program depends in large part upon the support of UNC faculty committed to promoting advanced foreign language proficiency and international expertise across disciplines.

Faculty members within the College of Arts and Sciences can participate in the LAC program in a number of different ways: by electing to teach a LAC seminar taught entirely in a foreign language; by offering courses with optional LAC discussion sections, generally taught by graduate teaching assistants; or by providing academic and administrative guidance to the LAC program.

In addition, course development grants of $1,500 are available to faculty who wish to design new LAC seminars or discussion sections.  These grants may include the cost of a research assistant to help compile course readings and develop teaching materials.
