- BA in African Studies
The major in African Studies, offered through the Department of African and Afro-American Studies, takes an inter-disciplinary approach to the study of Africa, inviting students to take advantage of departmental courses as well as Africa-related offerings by other units of the College of Arts and Sciences. Requirements are designed to provide a broad understanding of African history, a focus on a thematic topic of the student’s choice (for example: globalization, social movements and democratization, gender studies, or economic development), and in-depth knowledge of a specific region of Africa. Majors are strongly encouraged to use an African language to fulfill their foreign language requirement. UNC-CH offers a large range of courses at different levels in disciplines relevant to the training of specialists in African Studies; 94 non-language courses are taught on a regular basis. Several Africanist faculty members also offer seminars through UNC-CH’s Freshman Seminar Program, which brings first-year students into close contact with senior faculty and their research.
