The US Dept. of Education has established the following priorities for FLAS:
- At the graduate level, priority will be given to less commonly taught languages at all levels and to more advanced levels of training in commonly taught languages. At the undergraduate level, only students in the intermediate or advanced study of a less commonly taught language are eligible. - Priority may be given to talented students who are be more likely to pursue government service.
- Overseas awards are for advanced and intermediate levels only. Beginning level training abroad can be funded only if courses are unavailable in the US.
- Academic year FLAS fellows must be enrolled in both a language course and an area studies course in addition to their regular program of study.
- Summer awards must be used for intensive language training (120-140 contact hours over a period of 6 weeks). These awards cannot be used for research abroad.
- The
following applies only to European Studies dissertation applications: Academic year FLAS awards for dissertation research abroad are subject to the prior approval of US Department of Education Program officers, as is all travel abroad. FLAS fellows are responsible for initiating this approval process at least 60 days prior to departure. They must also remain enrolled at UNC in dissertation credits.
