Center for Global Initiatives
- International Conference Presentation Award:
These awards offer modest support to UNC-Chapel Hill faculty who are presenting scholarly work at conferences abroad.
- Fulbright Scholar Program:
Sends faculty and professionals to over 100 nations.
- Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad:
Allows faculty members to conduct research
abroad in modern foreign languages and area
studies (excluding Western Europe).
- Faculty Curriculum Development Awards:
Helps faculty add substantive international content to currently taught courses. Each award carries a $2,000 stipend and up to $2,500 for travel. Courses being developed may be graduate or undergraduate, and in any department, curriculum, or school.
Carolina Asia Center
- The Grier/Woods Presbyterian Initiative Fellowships in Chinese Studies: Semester-long faculty fellowships will be awarded to faculty pursuing research projects on China-related topics or themes during the academic year.
- The Grier/Woods Presbyterian Initiative China Travel Awards: Each year, 2-3 faculty travel awards will be made for faculty who wish to broaden or deepen their expertise on topics relating to China and who can demonstrate how this travel will contribute to curriculum development.
- Course Development & Revision Grants:
Several undergraduate course development grants are available for summer support for faculty members who want to devise new courses that deal with East and/or South-East Asia.
- Faculty Travel Fellowships:
Several fellowships are available for faculty who wish to travel to locations in East and South-East Asia to broaden and deepen their expertise on topics in the sciences, social sciences, or humanities.
- Multi-campus Team Teaching Fund:
This program offers opportunities for innovative teaching initiatives that allow for cooperation with colleagues at other campuses, other states and in other countries.
- Academic Enrichment Programs:
Funds are available to support visiting speakers, conferences, film festivals, and arts performances that will augment the intellectual life of the campus at all levels, especially to undergraduates, and will raise the visibility of East and South-East Asian studies.
Center for European Studies
- UNC Faculty may apply to European Studies for funding to:
- Develop entirely new courses on contemporary Europe.
- Develop “EU Tracks”, which are smaller course components inserted into existing courses intended to introduce the EU as a comparative case.
- Organize a research working group or conference
- Fund a joint project with a graduate student
- Fund research travel to Europe
- Fund domestic travel to present papers on European topics
Institute for the Study of the Americas
- Department of Education Title VI International Conference Travel Awards
- Department of Education Title VI Conference/Archive/Library Travel Awards
Faculty may now use these awards for domestic library or archival research as well as for travel to conferences.
- Department of Education Title VI Summer Research Awards
- Mellon Foundation Travel Awards
For domestic or international travel to present papers at conferences.

- SSRC Eurasia Program Predoctoral and Postdoctoral Fellowships
Deadline for all fellowship applications is November 14, 2006 at 9:00 pm EST. Eurasia Program Title VIII Fellowships serve to expand and strengthen the field of Eurasian studies through the support of research, writing, advanced-training and curriculum development. All fellowships are intended to support work on or related to the New States of Eurasia, the Soviet Union and/or the Russian Empire, regardless of the applicant discipline within the social sciences or humanities. Online applications and supporting materials, including detailed award descriptions and eligibility criteria, are now available on the SSRC Eurasia Program website.
